Gentoo was the easiest of the three platforms I've installed Catalyst on
(WinXP, RedHat Enterprise being the others). I'd second the Gentoo
recommendation, esp. if you're looking for a platform with a wide
variety of up-to-date programs, and don't mind working close to the
"bare metal" of the OS.

It might be a little "non-professional" but I just do:
g-cpan -i Catalyst
and then launch my application and see what are the missing modules by
the errors it throws. Then, I install missing modules via g-cpan. ;-)
