The Time Warner job listings are hosted by some outside company and their
interface sucks pretty bad. When I loaded it earlier, it was in Firefox on
OS X, but now that I'm at home, using the same thing, I'm getting the same
error you are. Most of the information that was in the link was cut and
pasted into the jobs.perl.org listing though, so you aren't missing much (it
was written by a manager and an HR guy anyway, so most of the info in there
is fluff.) It does seem to work if you start from the front page rather
than going directly to that listing though. Try going to
http://www.timewarner.com/corp/careers/jobtools_us/index.html, click on
'Search openings' and put '51974BR' in the 'Requisition #' box and
searching.
If you want the real story, what you find at AOL is that while most of the
company is windows-centric like most big companies, all that changes when
you get into the technical groups. The vast majority of the production
servers are Red Hat, and it's getting to be nearly impossible to find any
development team that isn't somewhere in the process of porting all their
stuff to linux so they can get rid of their legacy Solaris/HPUX hosts.
Windows servers are generally limited to applications where no other option
exists, and Windows represents probably less than 10% of the server base.
Linux desktops are extremely common among the technical staff (my main work
machine and my laptop are OS X.)
Specifically about the job, the team is a tools team, we build applications
that are used by AOL System Administrators. Our main products are a
linux-based install system that is used to install Linux, Solaris, HP-UX,
and Windows on servers in the data centers and a data collection system that
maintains hardware/software inventories of all the installed servers.
Because of our focus there is a lot of cross-platform work, although we do
have specialists on the team for each of the OSes that are supported. The
team is basically split down the middle, with 4 engineers (including Linux,
Solaris, HP-UX, and Windows specialties) and 4 developers (who also have
some specializations for the different applications). I'm basically the
team Architect/Lead Developer and the job posting is basically to get
another Perl guru so that I can take a day off once in a while. :) The job
is mostly Perl development, but having experience with Kickstart, Jumpstart,
Ignite, or Windows Unattended installs is extremely helpful.
I've been trying to spread the word wherever I can find Perl wizards hanging
out, and trying to eliminate some of the stigma that gets stuck to these
jobs just because they are for AOL. I went through the same thing, I never
thought I would work for AOL, my friends all mocked me for going to "the
dark side" (but then, they said that when I went to work for Red Hat too, so
I'm getting used to it) but it really is a great place to work, the benefits
are fantastic (among other things AOL is currently paying for my RHCA
certification, which entails somewhere around $15,000 worth of training) the
people are great, and the environment is incredible. This is the first time
I've stayed in the same job for more than 2 years, and I can certainly see
myself staying at AOL for a long time.
I don't know what is wrong with the job listing site, but I'm more than
happy to answer any questions you may have, and you can certainly send
resumes to me and I'll make sure they get to the right place (just send them
to my work address - jasonk at aol.net, which might actually be better than
applying online, as I'm more motivated than HR is to fill the position. :)
